I chose this poem for originality because I think Matuk takes the concept of the 4th / American freedom in general and flips it on his head. He begins the poem with a striking image-- "fun skimming the tops of trees" is reminiscent of teenage carelessness that one would expect from a poem about the 4th of July. His tone begins to slowly shift as the poem progresses, he calls the matching houses around him "ugly", and by the poem's conclusion he flat out rejects "American freedom". By choosing to end the poem with a sexual image, he redefines the narrative surrounding American idealism and identity, making for a very original poem.
