I chose this poem because I was struck by Hirshfield's line on page 102 that says "Truth and beauty live most happily amid complexity and paradox." I feel that this poem has an underlying complexity that belies the truth of the meaning. Though it is framed with music and songs, there is a very sad undertone that almost makes it seems as if the music is alive and personified. I think that that is probably what Hirshfield was trying to say with that line.
