In this poem the speaker talks about a past relationship from years ago. The retelling of the relationship includes the story aspect. The speaker has a very distinct voice that is very distinguishable. As the speaker is talking about a past relationship that she claims she no longer thinks about but obviously does, she gets emotional reminiscing about it.

I guess lots of people do this sort of “reminiscing”. I wonder what makes Duhamel’s different—how does it engage with this “objective” in a way in which only a poem can do, or only a Denise Duhamel poem can do?
