I chose this poem to go with this section of Nine Gates on Inward and Outward looking because of its focus on the outward of the carousel horses as a way to reflect on the speaker or maybe humanity. The poem mainly focuses on describing the horses. The speaker seems almost sad and sympathetic for the horses. In the last line of the second stanza, the speaker seems to be talking about the horses but he uses the pronoun we, perhaps showing how seriously he empathizes and shares the pain of these horses. While this poem is mostly a description of a lonely carousel, it also touches on some of the inward feelings of the speaker, which is why I think it goes so well with this section.
