Pronunciation

Updated: Jan 14, 2020

Hirshfield uses a rather wide selection of poets and terminologies, not all of them native to some of us. When recording, you should try to pronounce the names and terms as accurately as possible.

For terms, I often rely on https://howjsay.com . There's an iPhone app, too.

Names can be more difficult, so I try to use https://youglish.com, which finds videos and recordings of people saying words. It takes you to the spot in the video where they say the name/word too. Example: https://youglish.com/pronounce/abhidhamma/english If that fails, I just google the word followed by "pronunciation" and try to find a real person saying the word.

No one in this class will judge you for mispronouncing Nietzsche or Rimbaud, but you should know that there are poets, scholars, and instructors who will. Neitzcsche https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHWbZmg2hzU Rimbaud https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKhvv5hRrxU
