Emily's Log
On Tuesday, we started class with the daily index card warm up, this time writing down a question we had about the class. Mat then went over the syllabus again to look at what due dates are coming up soon. Once the class became situated, a signup sheet began going around the room for class logs, text presentations, and class discussions. Mat began to take brave volunteers to go the next class with it being so soon.
We began to go over text presentation instruction, but before we got too far into the instructions, Mat decided to go around the room trying to learn and remember new names. After pointing out all who were present in class, he continued on with the instructions about the presentation. Mat went into detail about what a text is in reference to both the presentation that we will eventually need to do, and the project that we begin writing soon. We learned in detail how a photograph, video, excerpt, or even a meme can be a "text." We were shown that whatever we chose should most likely have a connection to us, but it is not required and that it must have some importance in reflecting a community that we are a part of. To make sure the class fully understood what was being asked of us, Mat went over the terms regarding details of what we're presenting such as why he used the word rhetorical and what importance convention has to it. He shared examples that helped us better understand the project as a whole. Each instruction to the project was explained in full detail and it was extremely helpful. We watched shit Miami girls say, checked out the know your meme website, and used it as a tool to see more of what was needed for the project.
A little after the halfway point of class, we moved on to talk about Roxane Gay and her "I Once was Miss America" piece. A couple students shared their first blogs with the class and the class then began to discuss the blogs shared and were shown how to lead and take part in class discussions, which will occur numerous times throughout the semester. Students of the class shared their thoughts of the blogs and connected them to their own. Mat then took the last part of class to focus on the Miss America piece. We learned that the piece is actually a book review that could be seen as a personal narrative. We were shown how Roxanne used a book review to communicate a part of her life to the audience. The class ended with a couple final questions about the first project, in which the first draft is due Monday July 3rd.
