Kelly's Log

On Wednesday, class began with each student filling out their daily, attendance question flash card. We were asked to write about what “non-traditional” text we were thinking of presenting for our assignment and why. Mat then went over the schedule for composing the log, leading discussions, and showing mini-presentations for everyone. Our daily poem for this day was “Diving into the Wreck” written by Adrienne Rich, and we got to hear it spoken by the author herself. Moving into the next part of class, Emily read her log from the previous day (which reminded Mat that he had to try to learn names again by passing out our index cards from the previous day). Mat explained to the class that once a student begins to present a text, the class is to take notes on each one, which can end up contributing to our final project. Natalia began the presentations, by showing a meme that came from a social media post, addressing John Oliver’s quote about the concept of learning and understanding sexual consent. The class discussed what made the picture a meaningful and “non-traditional” text, and was asked to write down if memes are a good way to get information across/if there is a better way to get information out there. Once the class shared their answers with each other, we reviewed some statistics about FSU and sexual abuse in our school.

Sara came up in front of the class, and chose a few students to read their blog posts out loud. As we went along, Sara asked some students to share their opinions about each piece. Mat continued the conversation by calling on Derek, who wrote in his blog piece that “shitty first drafts” do not necessarily have to exist, and he explained his viewpoint on the topic. This led into our next assignment, in which we were told to answer three questions in a limited amount of time without editing at all. These topics included: “Where do you feel heard or understood?”, “Where do you feel spoken to?”, and the phrase “It’s complicated”. With each writing topic, we were given less time to get all of our thoughts down. While it was slightly a stressful activity, it really helped with learning to just write stuff down when trying to build our own text.

For the final part of class, Mat introduced our research proposal, and talked about what we would be doing for the next class. Class ended a few minutes early with the following homework for the next class:

  • Think of an idea for your community research

  • Write a blog post about Ch. 5 in the BBG textbook
