Derek's Log

We started off the class by reading the poem “Photo of a Girl on a Beach” by Carmen Gimenez Smith. Mat introduced the class to Jessie, who will soon be a teacher and is following in his steps. We went over again where to go for the first draft meetup (The Sweet Shop), and ensured that it’s a shitty first draft so there’s no need to worry about it being perfect.

Continuing from last class, we did an assignment called “Peeling the Onion,” where people in the class proposed their ideas, and asked for help or advice to make their paper even better. When it was Lexi’s turn, she couldn’t speak so she had to pull a Stephen Hawking and talk about her topic through a computer.

After the class finished discussing each of their individual topics, we began discussing the most terrible thing a human being can do: plagiarism. Many people in general are confused about what exactly it is, and this is important to know because it can lead to being ejected from the university, even if it’s a simple mistake.

According to FSU, plagiarism is defined as “using others’ ideas or words as if they were your own” (FSU 2). The best way to avoid plagiarism is to simply cite everything you’re unsure about (Mat Wenzel, 9:07 AM).

Finally, to make sure that everyone understood what constitutes plagiarism, there was another mini assignment where the class determined whether a student’s paper was plagiarized or not.
