Kaitlyn's Log

We started the class with Mat saying good morning and announcing to the class that he did not look at student emails last nights because he is “an old man” and goes to sleep at 8. He stated that he needed to read the class’s research proposals and noted that everyone is feeling a bit overwhelmed, and so is he. The class was once again reminded not to do the 9th blog post. We listened to the poem “Having a coke with you” by Frank O’Hara. Lexie read her log before we discussed how Mat will measure our final grade. Paper grades are the lowest, and the participation grades will either help your grade go up or down. We went over the research proposals, and went through a checklist of what we need/what direction we should be going in for the proposal. We need to have a concise thesis/question and a specific community, as well as a text to mention. Mat went through the math of our word count, stating that we have plenty of words to choose from considering our proposals and interviews, and told us not to fret. For our annotated bibliography, Mat told us not to read out sources from top to bottom, but just enough to figure out what it’s about and to briefly summarize them, talk about their strengths and weaknesses, and what we think about them. We were told to ignore the Research in Progress bit.

We then went on to do more mini-presentations. _____ presented a history and analysis of Pepe the Frog. Kelly presented two videos on Melania and the Pope slapping Trump’s hand away. Mat split up the work and told the three discussion leaders for tomorrow what content and questions to come prepared me. Derek and Tommy led the today’s discussion. Tommy asked the class how you approach writing an annotated bibliography, and people responded with their opinions and processes. We talked about the “Consider the Lobster”, and the controversy of differing opinions towards vegetarianism/veganism on social media. Derek asked for opinions on whether or not he should interview more people or to just stick with the interview he has now, and was advised to expand his sources as much as possible.
