Patrick and Austin's Log

Patrick

We started class today by reading the poem “Tuesday Ordinary” by Damien Caudill. Nico then read his log discussing the previous day. We then jumped straight into mini-presentations, with Taylor presenting a commercial Budweiser aired. This commercial showed a group of dogs that started sad until they could be happy. The video played with pathos and was aired during the super bowl 2014. _____ then presented Screen Junkie’s honest trailer for beauty and the beast. We discussed how trailers used to be misleading and movies would be nothing like the trailer. Charlotte then came up to lead the discussion with the class. She talked about and discussed blog #7, pick your own chapter in BBG. Sarah read her blog on Chapter 12 about the human body. We then discussed other shifts in society in recent time. Mat chimed in by talking about the advent of the internet during his childhood. We talked about how things were read before the internet, and we discussed how expensive reading was. Writers had to be bought by the companies to get your material printed. Next, we read another blog #7 by Austin where he discussed finding sources. We then talked about how we made sources fit into our essays even if we didn’t understand them.

We discussed our homework, with Blog #10 being assigned for tonight. The blog was on BBG Ch. 9, “Assembling a Multi-genre Project.” We also learned about project three, and were told to read about viral marketing and how the genres we make must be from real events. Taylor read the next project summary and Mat stepped in to describe what the project meant very early on. Caitlyn then read the second paragraph which described how the genres should be presented to their real audiences. We discussed the definition of appropriate; what is suitable in a set of circumstances. Nico read the next paragraph on examples of genres. Some examples are “Facebook group pages, informational websites, a twitter account, etc.” (Wenzel, proj. 3) Finally, we read the last paragraph about the rationale, however it is not required by this class. We should write one anyway, and it is what is the reason behind choosing our genre.

We then moved on to the pitch for project 3. We then discussed with a neighbor what a pitch was, until Mat stepped back in and defined a pitch. We record a short video on what we are going to do and pitch it for something that we are going to present and how it will be presented. We took two minutes starting a quick pitch on what we are going to do. We then discussed with the neighbor and Mat asked us how we are relating it to our project two.

We then got sad sad news that we won’t have class on Thursday, since we covered it today during class. We then learned that everything was going to be covered on Wednesday for project 3.

Class started today by Mat mentioning that he assumes everyone had turned in their final drafts of Project 2 due to the amount of emails he has for this class. Then Mat mentioned how it is all downhill from here, in a good way. He used the analogy of going down the hill on a bike. Following this he read a poem titled, Tuesday Ordinary by Damian Caudill. After the poem Nico read his class log that covered what we did in class the day before. Before students began presenting their mini-text presentations Mat asked the class if there were any major question that the class had. Then Taylor begin the mini-text presentations with a Budweiser commercial in which a cute puppy gets attached to a horse. This resembled the #BESTBUDS. She then discussed the effects that weather and music had in the video. Following Taylor’s presentation Tommy presented a video hat poked fun at the remade Disney movie Beauty and The Beast. The class then discussed their thoughts on the video. Following the mini text presentations Charlotte led class by having Sara read her blog post about Chapter 12 of the BBG. Charlotte then the proposed a question to the class about what we thought about the shift in literature today. After a moment of silence a few students had answered. Mat also answered by mentioning how the internet has allowed for so many more different writings to be available to people. After Charlotte’s discussion Lexy led class by having Austin E. read his seventh blog post. This led her to ask students how they incorporated their sources into Project 2. A few students gave examples of how they included sources in their writing. After the led discussions Mat began to go over the syllabus and talked about tonight’s blog post being from the BBG. HE also mentioned that on Wednesday night we will have to take a look at past classes in order to create our blog post.

To start off the second half of class we finished up talking about project 3. Mat went into detail letting us know about the different audiences we could target for project 3. We all need to be able to tie all of it back to what our topic was in project 2. Mat told us for project 3 we should write a rationale but it was not needed for the summer session. As a class we went into a 2 minute thinking session to try and figure out the three different types of genres you will use for you pitch. We then turned to our neighbor and got a feel for what a 60 second pitch was and tried to gauge how much time it would take. On Monday of next week we will be going in front of the class to give our last minute pitches. This will allow the class to critique it before we present our short presentations on Wednesday and Thursday. To help us understand we were able to see a recorded pitch by a former student. This gave us a better understanding of what we are supposed to be doing. We ended class with Mat letting us know that we already discussed everything for Thursday’s class so we will not be meeting that day. Class ended a little early and you could stay after to ask Mat any questions you had.
