Mat's Log
After the poem of the day, “Meditation at Lagunitas,” by Robert Hass, each student introduced themselves, sharing their name, pronouns, where they are from, their major, and what shoe they put on first. All of this information was also recorded on an index card which was turned in at the end of class as a means of taking attendance. The class then went over the syllabus. The syllabus can be found at the header of every page in the class website. Topics such as overall course description, grades, attendance, projects were reviewed. A few things were highlighted. Students are permitted four absences—no distinction is made between “excused” or unexcused absences. Students are graded on their final portfolio, but they will receive “as is” grades on the drafts of projects 1 and 2. Students must get a C- or above on all projects to get credit for the course. Then a student volunteered to set up a wix website on the projector so the class could follow along. Each student created a wix website which will serve as both their working portfolios and their final portfolio. Each website also has a blog where students will post a blog response to the required readings in the class. There was some discussion about the required text for the class. The first assignments are to read and respond to a chapter called “Shitty First Drafts” from Ann Lamott’s book Bird by Bird. This text is posted online. Students should comment on the class website blog post their names, a brief description of their response, and a link to their response. Students should also email the instructor a link to their wix website and a statement concerning the Civility Clause.
