Samantha's Log
We began class by writing our name, the date, and filling in the blank to a sentence Mat put on the board. The sentence was “I think I might write about my community ______ for Project 1. An important text there might be ________.” Mat passed back all the previous index cards and answered any questions students still had. We read the poem “Tuesday Ordinary” that was spoken on Fox and Friends in 2012. Ethan read the class log he composed on August 30th, 2017, which featured details and links to what was accomplished in class that day. Mat then introduced Project 1 as a personal narrative. This has to be in reference to a personal and community connection to a text. Also, this should be a community you have already been a part of. We read the information in the “Project 1” tab on Mat’s website that can be found at http://matwenzel.wixsite.com/2135/project-1. In addition, we visited a pikto chart website that Mat created in order to better describe Project 1, and made sure that we understood this is a story. A story usually starts in the middle of an action, describing a scenery with colors and smells, flashbacks that start the pace of a certain time, etc. They are almost always told in first person. The pikto chart website has a section entitled “Scope & Focus” which gives details on what the text should include and states that only our own experiences should be the focus. After going over Project 1, both Cassie and Autumn talked about previous blog posts from the week prior. Before they began, we went over some ways on ‘How to Discuss’ respectfully with statements such as “Is it your position that…” and “I’m confused when you say…”. Students then commented on her blog post, and related it to their own. Cassie read her blog post, which related the blog post to her love for reading as a child. Cassie then mentioned how much she admired Erin’s blog post that was focused on a comparison to the High School Musical movies. The class began to discuss and focused on the nostalgia brought upon old series and childhood events. Autumn then chose Juliana to read her blog post. She questioned whether or not high school in America was as it appeared in movies, being from Puerto Rico. We compared our high schools to hers and compared high school life to FSU college life. Mat wanted to speak more about “I Once Was Miss America” so we began to analyze it. We started off by questioning why the title is what it is and what this text is as a genre. We ended the class with a free write that aimed to be our 750-word draft based upon “a place where you felt heard…”. Next, we wrote about “a place where we felt spoken to…”. Lastly, we wrote about “a place where it’s complicated…”.
