Mackenzie and Marya's Log
Mackenzie:
We started class with our notecards where we answered the question “Who gets to define genre?” Then Mat read the poem of the day entitled “Sad Dictionary.” We next read through Gabi’s log from Sept. 18th detailing the previous class. Mat talked about syllabus updates, after the log, where he moved things a week back and discussed how class would not meet the next Monday. Instead we would be having individual meetings which we need to sign up for on the doodle link. He also discussed how we would be meeting in the library atrium on Wednesday the 27th. He then detailed changes to our schedules with doing logs, mini presentations and leading discussions, and how we won’t be worrying as much about logs or leading discussions but the mini presentations were rescheduled.
Next we went into more detail about project 1, 2 and the research proposals, discussing due dates and how we need to do the projects. He discussed how we needed to submit a interview summary by October 4th for project 2. He also discussed how to deal with missed blog posts by doing it and bringing in notecards to class to be forgiven for the late submission.
We then went further into the location of the conference, as some people had not been to Sweet Shop. Mat showed us the doodle site and how to sign up for a time slot, also mentioning to make time for parking if needed. Mat mentioned that we needed to send our 1,000 word draft to him before our individual meeting, leaving enough time for him to read and make notes on our drafts.
We then talked about how we responded to blog posts, making threads of replies and how Mat would like us to continue the trend of mentioning the person’s name we are replying to in our post.
Marya:
We started Peeling the Onion again by making assumptions about what each person shared and then asking a few questions. Mat participated this time as well by asking more questions. Just like on Monday, we made sure to emphasize and clarify that our focus should be on smaller communities or something specific within the community. Based on our discussion and clarifications from last Monday, it seems that everyone was more sure about what they chose and how to make their project’s texts unique by expanding from the stereotypical text to other texts such as a family recipe book, posters, and neighborhood logs. We were also able to offer each other more suggestions for both projects especially interviews for project 2. Mat clarified for us that it might be easier to write about something that we did specifically in our organization or influenced for project 1. Mat also emphasized that we will be writing about our own experiences for project 1 even if it is within our own communities. We should remember not to speak on behalf of other people but rather our own personal observations within that community. We were able to finish Peeling the Onion for the remaining 17 people in the class (yay go team!).
