Autumn's Log
We started class by watching/ listening to a video of Frank O’ Hara reading his poem “Having a Coke with You.” The link is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDLwivcpFe8. Tyler then read his log he composed for Monday, October 1st’s class. After that, Mat went over who is presenting and writing the log today. He updated us and told us he corrected some dates on the syllabus.
Mat then went onto Wix to show us how to post stuff on Wix, as last class several students offered up their confusion on doing so. You have to press edit site, and Mat went into his site to explain how he made different features of his blog, such as custom feeds on the home page of his site. To add a custom feed, you go to the add thing on the left of the screen and find custom feed. You then add the custom feed and you can click on the settings thing so that only the tagged Category: Project 1 posts show up on this custom feed. Mat also showed us another option, we can upload our word documents and just “plop” them on the Project 1 page.
Mat then thanked the people who have already sent him their research proposals for Project 2 and read these students name out loud. He then reminded us of some things about Project 2, such as that our research question needs to be answerable.
Marya then presented her mini presentation about a youtube video called “But I’m Speaking Japanese”:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLt5qSm9U80. Marya talked about how this video represents the discrimination of foreigners in Japan. Kimberly than gave her mini presentation on a video called “ASPCA Wolf Hybrid”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJ4sKyBubf8.
Summer and Samantha led our group discussion about “Consider the Lobster.” Summer chose Mackenzie’s blog that talked about Wallace’s use of footnotes and the audience and then chose Gabi’s blog which covered the basic construction of the article. Samantha chose Cole’s blog which talked about how the author alienated himself from the audience and then chose Nathan’s blog to talk about which addressed the structure of the article also.
Mat explained one of the reasons we are taking ENC 2135 is to expand beyond the basic “5 paragraph essay” we all learned in high school. He tied this into our Project 2 and “Consider the Lobster.” We need to be writing detailed papers like “Consider the Lobster.” Mat wants us to write a paper that gets our message across, using any genres.
Mat talked about our annotated bibliography. He clarified that on the 11th we are bringing to class four sources and a 600 draft of our annotated bibliography. He then began to talk about our final drafts for project 1 by using past projects as examples. The Project has to be in MLA format, a NARRATIVE (use I!), include details to place the reader in the community, and make sure tenses are the same. We then looked at Gabi’s most updated Project and Mat gave her some feedback.
