Kate's Log
Today we began the class by filling out our index cards. Mat asked “so far, the most credible source I’ve found for project2 is _______, and the least useful is _______.” Next Mat read the poem “Our Love Transcends Sexuality & Gender & Time & Place; Translation Not Now, Not Ever” which can be found on the right side of Mat’s blog. Next Autumn read her log from the previous class (10/4). Mat reminded us that our research question must be small enough to be answered with some research, but not so small that the answer is super obvious. The question must be “answerable but not too answerable” as he phrased it.
Mat then went over some of the index cards from the past class. The prompt was “a great example of a text that is doing a lot for a specific community is ____.” He used a few examples to show that some of the index cards are not as specific as they need to be. He related this to project two by emphasizing that very specific details are needed in order to make this a decent project. Mat also emphasized the difference between a text that is simply “important” and a text that actually has a daily influence on members of the given community.
Mat then reminded us that shit is coming up. He advised us that we should probably at least have one source by now and have skimmed it to get a feel for what we will write in the annotated bibliography. We must have four sources to present to our response groups by our next class (10/11). Our first paper (due this morning) will receive an “as-is” grade, and we are able to revise it all the way up until finals week to get a better grade. The grades will be reachable on Canvas as soon as Mat sets it up. Mat then showed us how he wants the bibliography formatted. He took us to www.owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/614/03/ , which shows an example of how to do citations in MLA, Chicago, APA, etc. In the search bar on the Purdue website, you can search “interview” or “tweet” and the website will take you to a guide on how to format your annotation (make sure you are in the right citation format).
Next Makenzie came up for her mini-genre presentation. Her text was a Simpson cartoon that made fun of the leniency at which we treat gun control as opposed to other harmful objects. Her full presentation can be found under the “mini text presentation” tab on her blog. Next was Arek’s presentation. Arek’s text was a photograph of Colin Kaepernick kneeling during the national anthem. His specific focus was based around the cause Kaepernick was protesting. He talked about how Kaepernick’s act was spreading, and has blown up in the media. He discussed the different reactions viewers had to this act.
Next Mat talked about plagiarism. We read the FSU academic honor code statement, the English departmental statement, and the plagiarism definition. Mat said that something to remember is even if you paraphrase, you still have to cite the resource. Mat then read examples that were on the document and everyone answered “yes” if they thought it was plagiarism and “no” if they did not (all of the examples were plagiarized). The information and examples on plagiarism can be found in a document on Mat’s blog (posted October 9th).
Tyler then led his discussion on blog #6. First, he read his own blogpost, which discussed what parts of the BBG CH7 he appreciated, but highlighted that it does not discuss different citation styles for different majors. Next Erin read her blog, which discussed the specific helpful sections in the chapter. Next Cole read his blog, which completely contrasted Erin’s blog. He discussed how the chapter was not helpful at all, and was only a repeat of his high school experience with citing sources.
Lastly Mat went over some of the features of the Purdue Online Writing Lab. He showed us the MLA Sample paper, which is annotated and shows how to do things such as the header, spacing, title, and gives helpful tips throughout the paper. It also includes an example of a parenthetical citation (page 3). Mat encouraged us to get help on our papers and come to his office hours.
