Darian's Log

Mat had us start class by filling out our card saying, “The most urgent part of P2 that I need to work on is ________.” He then pulled up the signup sheet that says who was doing what that day. Mat then told us that we need to work on our discussions, since many people weren’t participating and they were starting to become one person just reading their blog posts. He suggested that those who are leading the discussion call on people who don’t normally speak up and ask them to comment on the discussion. We then listened to the poem “Diving into the Wreck” written and read by Adrienne Rich (https://www.poets.org/poetsorg/poem/diving-wreck). Kate then read her log from October 9th. Mat then showed us the formal description of Project 2 on pg. 15 of the syllabus. He mentioned how we should use the guiding questions to be make our project more specific. Next, he showed us the basic outline of project 2 on pg. 16. We then moved onto the mini text presentations. Tyler presented his text first, which was a SNL video that mocked a Hillary Clinton campaign video. He discussed how it was typical for SNL but not for a campaign ad. Jessica went next and showed the class a video called “How to Read Sheet Music.” It was a spoof of the educational videos on the internet that advertise an easy way to learn how to read sheet music, yet display a huge amount of complicated information in a short amount of time. It is atypical as it seems to be very serious, but is actually meant to be funny. We then discussed what genres different texts may fall under. Mat had us each write down what genre we thought Tyler’s video was and he made a list of them on the board. We were then asked to combine some of the genres on the list to make a specific one. He then had some people share theirs. The genre we chose for Tyler’s video was “SNL YouTube Political Campaign Parody Clip.” We then watched another SNL video called “Trump Voters Ad” to demonstrate the similarities of most SNL videos. We then discussed the characteristics of these videos and what made them seem like real campaign ads. Once we finished our discussion, Mat had us break into our peer response groups to discuss our annotated bibliographies. He then went around to each group to answer specific questions anyone had.
