Jessica's Log
Class began with Mat greeting the class, then talking about what we would be doing in class for the day. We also filled out our note cards for the class by writing “The only thing I have left on my P2 is…”. He reminded us that the final draft of our Project 2 is due on Monday, and he said he would work on grading them faster, aiming to grade four a day. He told us that he is not holding office hours as usual due to the continued bed bug problem, so if you need to meet him, you should email him to set up a time to meet at the Sweet Shop. He went over who would be presenting in class and leading discussion, then proceeded to read the poem for the day. The poem was Gloss by Angie Estes, and can be found here: https://www.poets.org/poetsorg/poem/gloss.
Kimberly read the log from the previous class, and Mat taught us the difference between “orally” and “aurally”. Mat then showed us the Project 2 rubric that he put together based on what we had discussed in the previous class. He explained what all our papers need to include in order to achieve the different grades, and expanded on the criteria he included in the rubric.
Erin presented her non-traditional text presentation. She showed the video “Michael Scott’s School of Management” (which can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLp8pjqwlsc), and discussed how it presents what is usually offensive in a non-offensive, funny way.
Juliana presented her non-traditional text presentation. She showed the video “Bad Boys 2 Who The Fuck Is Reggie?” (which can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMnP_zQmMLw), and discussed how it is typical of the genre, as well as the use of stereotypes and controversial subjects such as misogyny.
Summer presented her non-traditional text presentation. She showed a clip from Futurama (which can be found here: http://www.cc.com/video-clips/rmlrfx/futurama-internet-film), and discussed how it is relevant to the problems with garbage that the world faces today. Her presentation can be found on her Wix site here: https://ash16h.wixsite.com/enc2135/single-post/2017/11/07/Mini-Presentatin. Mat also talked about how her presentation is a good example for Project 3, because it uses two different genres (a video clip and an article) to present the same message.
Mat reminded us that we need to read Chapter 10 from the Bedford Book of Genres and create a blog post for homework. However, we now need to utilize a new genre for our blog response.
We discussed Project 3, beginning with reading what is written about the project in the syllabus. For Project 3, we have to choose a message relevant to our chosen community from Project 2, and represent the message in three genres. Mat explained how there are three types of messages within communities: those communicated between individuals within the community, those communicated from those within the community to those outside of the community, and the message that you as an individual want to present about your community. He warned that we need to actually circulate the texts that we create, so we need to be careful about the message that we communicate. For example, we can’t create fake events, or create fake social media accounts for established communities. We also need to be aware of where/how we circulate the texts, keeping the audience that we want to reach in mind. We then discussed potential genres and messages with others at our tables.
