Cole's Log
Monday’s class started out with filling notecards out saying, “I just can’t wait until_______.” Then Mat read the poem Tree by Jane Hirshfield followed by Jessica reading her log. Next Mat talked about how he would try and have our project 2 papers graded in the next four days and how it is not too late to make revisions if someone realized they made a huge error. He then mentioned that we could go to his office hours (held at the Sweet Shop) to have our papers graded immediately if we wanted.
Then we jumped into the first mini presentation of the day. Brooke’s presentation was about a video from Parks and Rec regarding soda sizes which can be found here: https://youtu.be/Ish8NBunrQU. She talked about how the video shows an aspect of American culture that could be perceived as problematic because of the exaggeration present. Olivia went next and shared a video called “How to love your introvert” which can be found here: https://youtu.be/Bfh_mRA5B6A. She talked about how the video is typical of the genre of slam poetry because of its structure, yet atypical because it focuses on a more personal note.
After presentations we went into class discussion where we looked at blog post #8. We started with my post of a PowerPoint, then went to Nick’s post containing a flowchart, and finished with Summer’s post of an infographic. Mat then asked us how we were feeling about project 3. He reminded us that our project 3 should have all the genres tie together. They also need to be created, but they can be digital works. We then did an exercise where we wrote down 5 texts/genres that we would see in places based off our birthdays. After we went around the room and shared some of our responses, Mat picked four of our project topics and split the class into groups. Within these groups we created a mock project three based off the texts and topics he assigned. His point ended up being that almost anything can work for project 3. He finished class by reminding us not to do an artist’s statement or rationale for the project because we are doing a one-minute pitch instead.
