Madison's Log
On Wednesday, class started with everyone filling out the attendance card asking if we had any further questions about the class. Then we had to email out wix site link to Mat for his reference. After, Mat went over the log from Monday and showed us how to make a blog on the new wix as well as other student’s websites for examples on how to format our blog.
We then went into more detail about how mini-presentations and discussions work. Mat then proceeded to go into the first discussion about the first blog. The main points of this discussion were that genres intertwine and are more complex, one piece can have more than one genre and is not just limited to a single one like we were taught, and we thought of different examples of categorizations like genres. One of the examples mentioned was how in the Special Ed field, a person can have a different type of autism and it is not simply categorized as autism. We then focused on what rhetorical situation is and how time and exigence (the why) influence it.
We went back to the syllabus and went over how the Martin Luther King Jr. blog post is not mandatory and reviewed what “Blog About It” posts are. Mat said that in Blog About It posts, you can write about (mostly) whatever you want as long as it pertains to the class. He then talked about our next assignment on “I was Once Miss America” and how it is not about how great high school was (due next class). After this Mat found a really big mistake in the syllabus and figured out that all of the dates are wrong but it’s ok because he is going to fix it!!!
Then Mat went into more detail about the non-traditional text presentations and told us how they are more of a discussion and not a super polished presentation. These presentations are meant to open our eyes to genres we are not very familiar with but there is more information in the post called “non-traditional text presentation” on Mat’s website. Mat then proceeded to show us his own non-traditional text presentation called “Shit Miami Girls Say”. After watching the video we discussed the stereotypes the video touched on as well as who this video could offend. We wrapped up class by introducing our first project and thinking about ideas we want to write about.
