Alicia's Log
● On Wednesday, class began with everyone picking up an attendance note card and filling out the following information:
○ First name
○ Last name
○ Course/section
○ Date
○ Question they still had about the course
● After
● Then, he answered any questions we had about our blog posts.
● While on the topic of blog posts, Matt asked the class if anyone wanted to volunteer to
share theirs.
○ Hans, Gracie, and Leo ended up sharing theirs with the class as well. After each
of their posts, the class held a discussion. ● At one point, Matt told us to come up with our own definition of genre. Matt then wrote
definition of genre and other terms from Chapter 1 on the screen. ○ Genre - the category of composition/literature. ○ Rhetorical appeals - involves ethos/pathos/logos/kairos. ○ Rhetorical situation - all of the things that help create the text.
■ Such as:
● Purpose ○ Why the author or writer composed their piece.
● Audience ○ Who our piece is targeted towards.
● Tone/Style ○ The attitude, mood, choice of words.
● Exigence ○ Why the author must compose the text.
● What is the difference between purpose and exigence?
○ The purpose is what they are trying to accomplish.
○ Exigence is why the author MUST compose the text.
● After this, Matt went over leading discussions.
○ When leading a discussion you must:
Read your own blog post
Call on two or three other people to read theirs.
● Matt went over Non-Traditional Text Presentations.
○ You’re going to pick a topic that’s short and can be digested in 90 minutes or less.
○ Videos should be less than 5 minutes. Talking about it should be less than 5 minutes as well. “Keep it nice, short, and simple” - Matt.
○ Examples of what he means by text are:
■ A video, gif, poem, meme, etc.
● You’re only bringing in one example of that.
doing so, Matt read the log from January 9th.
○ He continued to discuss what exactly should be demonstrated. ■ You could find this information under the Non Traditional Text
Presentations tab on his wix. ○ If you use sources, make a list.
■ It doesn’t have to be in MLA Format but atleast make a list of where you got it from.
● Matt talked about Shit Miami Girls Say.
○ He doesn’t have a personal connection with this video but thought it was funny.
○ Before he talked about it, he showed us a video about “Shit Girls Say”.
■ This was the original video that went viral.
○ Then he noted that if you use a meme as your text, the website
“knowyourmeme.com” is a great website that will explain where it originated, why
it went viral, etc.
○ Highlights from the Shit Miami Girls Say:
The tone of this video is funny, the audience can be wide but the target audience is someone who is familiar with people from Miami.
This video may offend:
● Latinos and Hispanics
● Women
● Transgender ● At the end of class, we talked about the homework.
○ Read the piece from Roxanne Gay- I Once Was Miss America. ■ It’s a mentor text for our first project.
○ Blog about it, comment on other blogs, include section numbers. ● Then, class was dismissed.
