Jillian's Log
- Notes cards were passed out and we filled them out for attendance
- We read a poem at the start of class
- Aakiem and Leo reviewed their log from last class
- We then discussed Project 1:
• Went over the description of the project • Observed and reviewed the chart Mat made on our Project 1 Personal Narrative
- We talked in depth about what a narrative is
- For the purposes we are using the word “text” broadly as anything that has meaning
- Contrary to what we had previously learned, in this personal narrative we are to use the personal pronoun “I”
- If Mat was a high school teacher he would have “be definite, specific concrete”
• we should include as many definite, specific, and concrete details in our writing
- Our personal narrative should center around only one event or text
- An example of Subverting Genre:
• “I Once Was Ms. America” is a personal narrative but it was supposed to be a book review
- she summarizes Sweet Valley High
- includes her personal opinion
- however, she includes a lot of personal details that made is seem like a narrative
- Mat encourages us to be creative and borrow from genres if we need to convey our message
- From the Tips and Reminders section of Chart: 1
Text does not have to be written it can be anything that evokes meaning
• Don’t paint things with a broad brush, make your story really tell your story - Grading of Papers: When Mat is grading he is looking for the following:
That we make decisions that serve our purposes
We write for a real audience
We revise
Also, writing is a process, so is grading
Mat emphasized that he is most interested in the exigence of our personal narrative
- Look for sign ups on Mat’s blog for Project Revision with him but we also should send our drafts to our peer revision groups
- We then did an in class writing activity
- Aakiem presented a mini presentation on why drugs are a part hip hop culture
- Mat dismissed Class
