Jake's Log
Mat started the class with the classic attendance note cards. He asked those who were present to define plagiarism and followed it with the question of what plagiarism looks like in 2018. We then proceeded to the poem of the day, which had many Spanish influences in the writing. Lilly read her log from last class on how we went to the library for research purposes in aid of our project 2. Mat went over the project proposals for project 2 and implored all to send it in and to talk to him if they needed help. Nakima then read her log from two classes ago as the class didn’t have a chance to hear it in our previous meeting, because of the trip to Strozier.
The genre presentation of the day was lead by Jarod. He chose pictures of a lego creation, representing the story of Mark 11:15, where Jesus walked into the temple and cleared out the people trying to do business in “his father’s house”. Jarod described the genre as atypical in the sense that the lego depiction of the story from the Bible, drew in a younger audience and enticed them to pay attention more than normal scripture/readings would. He also pointed how the titles of the stories that accompanied the lego slideshows, were whimsical (with exception to the title consisting of “communism” and “die”).
After Jarod’s presentation, Taylor lead the class discussion. She started by reading her own blog, on Chapter 5 of the BBG, giving a detailed description of what she had gathered. Mat transitioned the flow over to preparation for project 2, and Taylor led the class in a peeling the onion type activity. Mat emphasized on being as detailed as possible in project 2, so that there is no room for assumption. The class was reminded that the interview for our project was due in our next meeting.
Mat went back to the front and stressed to the class the importance of not plagiarizing. He told us to turn to our neighbors and share what we had answered on our note cards about the topic. We then signed a document stating that Mat covered the topic with us, stressed the consequences, and answered any of the questions we may have on the matter.
We then, as a class, read an FSU informal document on plagiarism. It included the Academic Honor Code, English Department Statement, a definition of plagiarism and examples of such. Mat then went over some more modern forms of plagiarism and talked about how while there may not be immediate legal action for some of them, it still is plagiarism. We went over an exercise where a “student” modified a snippet of text from a source, and we had to distinguish whether or not the “student’s” version was plagiarism. Finally Mat, went over the importance of the abstracts of sources, involved in our research for project 2.
