This course will develop your skill in identifying, researching, and manipulating genres that are practical to your chosen field of study and that you find interesting.
Genre knowledge and practice will be applied to communities in which you have been or are already a part of, communities you are gravitating toward, and communities for which you have an important message.
"If I knew anything about being black in America it was that nothing was guaranteed, and all that was certain for most of us was a black death."
This is an impactful comment from Ghanah about racism in America, and how African Americans have no kind of support from the rest of the country. They only have the assurance of death, without any kind of security of a good job or comfortable housing or good health care. They have to fight harder than other groups to have any kind of security, and have to gain it for themselves rather than having it already offered to them.
"On good days, being the first black intern meant having my work done quickly and sounding extra witty at the water cooler; it meant i was chipping away at the glass ceiling that seamed to top most of the literary world"
Through everyday activities Ghansah tried to break through the color barrier of the times and he tried to fit in by cracking jokes.
"the editorial staff seemed to strangely be all white as well."
I think its interesting to see how often race runs through Ghansah's head. Earlier he speaks about how he forgot that he is black because of all the excitement. Its weird to me to think about someones race or color whenever you're speaking to them.
" I wanted to write against this, and so I was writing a history of the people I did not want to forget."
Ghanah talks here about how there are people out in America the black community gets treated this certain way and that makes him think of this certain type of death. With that he wants to go in the opposite direction of talking about the sadness aspect of his community, but rather celebrate them. He wants to talk about the achievements, the glory of the people in his life that have impacted him, and in a way thank them.
