Today in class we started off by writing who our favorite storyteller is and why on our index cards. Mat reminded us to check the syllabus every day, so we know exactly what is due each class and showed us the checklist he made and posted to his blog. He also reminded us to send the link to our wix website to his email because a lot of students forgot to do that. After giving us some reminders about the class, we shared our index cards on the best storyteller we know. We then wrote down 3 ways we communicate important messages and shared them with the class. Mat then had us talk with our groups about the reading we had for homework by electing a leader to stay on track/check time, a speaker that will share with the class, a recorder who will write down stuff, and a tech person whole will google stuff. He wanted us to list and name 5 strategies Fuller uses to tell her story. Each group shared with the class and Mat wrote a list of the most shared strategies. This list included: dialogue, pathos, “thinking out loud”, irony, imagery, discrimination, inference, normalization, hook, characterization and “slang”. We were asked what the texts and communities are in the story. Some of the texts were music, discrimination, conversations, and the picture in the outhouse. Finally, we read a narrative from Mat’s past classes and talked about the strategies they used/ didn’t use with the class.
